Megan's Baby Diary

I've always wanted to breed a horse of my own, so after much consideration I decided it was now or never, at 15 Megan wasn't getting any younger, and at 30, neither was I... so, we tried to see if we could make a baby - that is, see if Megan could make a baby!!!!!

The whole process started at the beginning of April when we took Megan for a breeding examination to make sure she was up for the job, and to our delight she was given a clean bill of health and we were given the go ahead.

After much searching and deliberation we chose a beautiful 16.3hh grey Irish Draught stallion called Young Prospect. Our main reason for choosing him was the fact that, not only was he beautiful looking, but he was a good alrounder who loved to do a bit of everything, and his temperament sounded fantastic... and knowing what Megan is like, we definately needed a stallion that was hopefully going to pass on it's good natured genes onto our future arrival!!!!!

Following an initial negative pregnancy test, we made the decision to try just once more, so all our fingers and toes were crossed this time round. Following numerous trips backwards and forwards to the vets for hormone injections and scans, she was confirmed ready for insemination on the 2nd Bank Holiday in May - typically Megan hadn't made things easy, and with no postal services on the Bank Holiday, this meant we had to make that all important journey to visit the stud and collect the Stallion's semen in person. It was a journey worth making; we got to meet Young Prospect in the flesh (who I have to say was even more impressive looking than in the pictures) and see the whole semen collection and preparation process, we were even allowed to have a look down the microscope to make sure the little wigglers were alive and kicking, which they certainly were!!!!! So, later that day Megan was inseminated and two weeks later we made the trip back to the vets for Megan's first pregnancy diagnosis scan, and to our delight she was immediately confirmed pregnant, and that's when reality hit and the panic set in!!!!!

Thirty days later Megan had another scan which confirmed all was progressing well, but now we had an axious wait until her 4 month scan to ensure she was still pregnant and everything was looking normal. Before we knew it the 4 months was up and it was time for her last scan before she was just left to it - the scan confirmed she was still pregnant and that all was looking as it should be, so that was a huge relief. We could officially say that she had a "baby" belly, rather than just a "grass" belly or a big fat "I've eaten much to much" belly.

It's now the beginning of November and 5 months down the line Megan is looking very well. I stopped riding her just before her 4 month scan - she became too sensitive, yes even more sensitive than normal, so I gave up while I was ahead - and now she enjoys a very easy life mooching around the field, eating and sleeping... oh, if only my life was quite that easy!!!!! Now it's a case of watching her grow and waiting for the big day... I expect it'll be here before I know it... I can't wait!!!!!
